The Cincinnati Dryer Vent Installation Wizard Comments on Recent Dryer Fire

In addition to poor maintenance, improperly installed dryer vent systems that do not meet current safety standards can be a fire hazard

Feb. 2, 2011 - PRLog -- Cincinnati, OH – Professional dryer vent installation by a certified dryer exhaust technician means peace of mind for consumers that their clothes dryer operates as safely and efficiently as possible.  Though failure to clean dryer vents is the leading cause of dryer fires, improper dryer vent installation can also be a contributor.

A recent dryer fire in Williamstown caused major damage to a home resulting in total loss for a family who just completed some major repairs and remodeling, including a new roof and siding.  The man and his daughter escaped safely, thanks to working smoke detectors that alerted them.

Ed Rauch is the Cincinnati Dryer Vent Installation Wizard who works hard to make a difference in his community, performing an important service while educating his customers.  “Though the exact cause of the recent dryer fire was not indicated, it was most likely failure to clean the dryer vent or a faulty dryer vent system.  It’s too bad, with all the work that was done to the home they lost everything after a dryer fire.”

Ed Rauch says he finds a problem with 9 out of 10 dryer vent systems he inspects.  He recalls one job where the homeowner cleaned the dryer exhaust duct before installing a new clothes dryer, but failed to make sure it was properly installed.  The dryer duct was very long with several 90-degree elbows between the back of the clothes dryer and the vent outdoors.

Ed Rauch explained some of the guidelines for proper dryer vent installation, “The length of dryer exhaust ducts should not exceed 25 feet from the back of the dryer to the vent outdoors.  This recommendation applies to straight ducts; reduce the length by 2.5 feet for each 45-degree bend and 5 feet for each 90-degree bend.  Excessive length and bends and turns will restrict air flow.”

Rauch revealed other issues with inferior dryer vent systems including the use of vinyl or flexible foil which is only suitable for bathroom exhaust fans and not safe for a dryer duct.  “Dryer exhaust ducts must be constructed of rigid metal with smooth interiors to promote maximum air flow.  Exhaust ducts should be connected with foil tape, not sheet metal screws which protrude to the inside, catching lint and causing dryer exhaust leaks,” said Rauch.

Another common mistake found when inspecting dryer vent systems is a screen at the termination point.  Screens allow lint and dust to build up and block air flow.  The vent should have a back draft damper or flaps that open and expel air when the dryer is running.

Dryer Vent Wizard recommends having a dryer exhaust specialist inspect the dryer vent system to be sure it is properly installed to meet city, state and manufacturer’s codes.  “In addition, professional dryer vent cleaning is recommended at least once a year; more often if you have a large family and are doing more laundry than the average household,” said Rauch.

A properly installed dryer vent system of the correct dryer exhaust material will improve the efficiency and safety of a clothes dryer.   Dryer Vent Wizard works to promote public awareness while making clothes dryers safer and greener.  Visit http://cincinnati.the-dryerventcleaning.com/ to learn more.
