Jan. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- With a change of seasons just around the corner, and the inevitable winter market upon us, I thought I'd take a moment to list the Top 10 Reasons to live in Bedford.  This is a nice reminder for those of us who live in town and something to consider if you're thinking of moving into town.
- Our town is rich in culture. The Bedford flag on display at Bedford Public Library is the oldest known surviving intact battle flag in the United States. It is celebrated for having been the first U.S. flag flown during the American Revolutionary War.
- We have a strong community.  With community groups like the Arts and Crafts Society, Chess Club, Environmental Preservation or Daughters of the American Revolution there is something for everyone if you want to get involved.
– Education is a priority in Bedford.  Bedford High School is 15th best in the state.  Bedford history teacher Jim Sunderland was named Massachusetts History Day Teacher of the Year in 2009. In Bedford, each history classroom has a document camera to study maps and newspaper articles, and interactive screens for collaborative web research. When Sunderland’s pupils were learning about Keynesian economics, they interviewed Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman. No wonder Bedford students have either won or been finalists in four of the past six National History Day contests.
-   When many areas of the country are seeing double digit declines, our homes are holding their values and increasing.
- No matter where you live in town, you're close to the center that is alive with shops and Massachusetts’ signature New England feel.  The Avenue is bustling and embodies what a Main Street should feel like.
- We have low crime with excellent police and fire protection tightly connected to the community.  The Bedford Police department developed a program called School Threat Assessment and Response System (STARS) designed to prepare, assess, respond, and hopefully prevent threats of violence in our schools through mobilizing regional resources that recognize the individual uniqueness and integrity of each community.
7. Bedford is a very welcoming community to many diverse cultures. Whether you trace ancestors to the Mayflower or to the court of the Ming Dynasty you will find a warm welcome and a real interest in your culture, language and customs.
- We are the proud home to Hanscom Air Force base and have been since 1941.
- We're only 20 miles from Boston and route 128 is easily accessible to our residents.  This not only makes for a smooth commute if you were to work in the city, but makes all of the amenities Boston has to offer, such as the thriving theatre district, world-class symphony, opera, museums and shopping.
– We are accessible. It’s just a short drive to the cape, the shores of Maine, the mountains of New Hampshire, and the bright lights of New York City. Logan Airport is just around the corner if you’re looking to travel further.
