Dr. Allen Meek Named Finalist for Long Island Business News’ Health Care Heroes Award

Dec. 22, 2010 - PRLog -- (Bay Shore, New York) — Dr, Allen Meek, Chairman, Department of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University Medical Center and Co-President, Breast Cancer Help, Inc., has been named a finalist for Long Island Business News’ “Health Care Heroes” Award in the category of Physician Hero.  Health Care Heroes is an award program produced by Long Island Business News.

A native of Wilton, Connecticut, Dr. Meek graduated Amherst College with a BA in chemistry, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.  He received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins Medical School. He completed his post-graduate medical education at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology.

In 1983, he came to Stony Brook University as the founding chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology and still serves in that capacity. He served as Clinical Director of Stony Brook University’s Cancer Center from 1994 to 2000. In May 2008, he was elected to Fellowship in the American College of Radiology.

Dr. Meek has garnered many accolades, including Best Doctors©, and the Castle Connolly Guide to Top Doctors in the New York Metro area. In addition, he served two years active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a General Medical Officer based in Norfolk, Virginia.

In September 2008, Dr. Meek was honored by Breast Cancer Help for his 25 years as founder and chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University.

He serves as co-president and treasurer of Breast Cancer Help, Inc., and as a board member of the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, Inc. He is founder and chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University and has served in many leadership roles in Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Currently, Dr. Meek is working with Dr. Avraham Dilmanian at Brookhaven National Laboratory to look at the use of implementing microbeams with both synchrotron-generated x-rays and with carbon ions to destroy cancerous tumors while reducing the damage to the healthy tissue surrounding the targeted area in the process.

“I am very honored to receive this prestigious award,” Dr. Meek said. “I am also proud to be associated with Breast Cancer Help in its goal of finding the causes of breast cancer and eradicating this deadly disease. The research I am performing with Dr. Dilmanian will help in reaching the organization’s goal.”
