One group of people think bird is the best hunter pet. It has fast attacks, better than normal armour and about normal hp made for a good aggro/tank pet. Also they fly, so less pathing issues and you can cross any terrain like when you jump down a long way, or across a ravine or something, witout having to worry if the pet will be able to follow. they'll eat fish(just too handy) and meat and can learn all the pet abilities.

Second group of people hold that the best tank pet is a bear. Bears are very powerful fighters, who eat everything you can carry. Bears have two general abilities: bite and claw. Their main weakness is that they're still waiting on a defining ability.

Third group of people think the best DPS pet are cat. It costs little money. They attack very fast. They will eat just about any old meat that drops. They can learn both claw and bite (which should always be on autocast). They look cool. They don't have the hits of bears and boars, but a good hunter won't find that an issue until you pull two mobs and then 2 pop on you. With one's cat, one can handle 3 even con mobs without difficulty, and 4 if one'm really on top of things.
