The lack of marketing mindset is when you misunderstand what marketing and selling really is.  Most service professionals shiver with disgust on a mere thought of having to promote and sell their service.

The first and most important thing that you have to get into your brain is that you are in TWO BUSINESSES.  Most people think no I am in only the power washing business or window cleaning business or whatever business you may be in, but again every business owner is in TWO BUSINESSES.

The first and foremost business that you and all other business owners are in is that of MARKETING YOUR SERVICE or BUSINESS and the second business is delivering your service or goods.

If you don’t market your business you might as well close up shop and go work for someone else that will do the marketing for you because all the hoping and praying you do will not bring customers through the door.  

The people that I deal with on a daily basis are very entrepreneurial.  They are small business owners and self employed power washers.  Some of them even have other jobs, so, they usually have a lot of baggage when it comes to marketing and selling.  You may even be one of those people yourself.  

You may have been told (usually by someone that works for someone else and has no clue what they are talking about )  “If you do a good job you’ll never have to advertise because your good reputation and your good results will get you all the clients you can handle”

What a bunch of CRAP!!  That is the biggest lie anyone could ever tell you. I wish it was true but it’s just not true at all.  There are so many ways to advertise, some costly, some inexpensive and some that are free, however to generate a steady flow of clients you need a time tested and proven marketing system that will turn your power washing business into an auto-pilot money making machine.

I know that a lot of people think that marketing is manipulative or salesy and you think that you are forcing people to do business with you.  However, if you truly believe that you have the best product or you do the best job, than you are doing your prospects a total disservice by not convincing them to use you.  They are going to buy from someone and if it’s not you it might be the next fly by nighter that comes along and does a crappy job.    Think about that, you have the best product or service out there and you let one or your prospects jobs get completed by someone that isn’t qualified, insured or they may not even be ethical.  WOW!  I hope that one hit you as hard as it hit me.  Believe me I use to give up real easy when I was talking to prospects and where did it get me, no where!  I would drive by the prospects house later only to see they had someone else do the job and it was done poorly at that. So I will say it again because it is very important.

if you truly believe that you have the best product or you do the best job, than you are doing your prospects a total disservice by not convincing them to use you.  If you don’t have the best product or service, CHANGE IT, so you do have the best product or service, because if you don't believe in your product or service, why would you prospect.

I want to leave you with this little story that Martin Howey CEO of TopLine Business Solutions told me. (My wife and I were lucky to have breakfast with him four days in a row at a seminar in Las Vegas November 2010)

Martin asked me if kept doing the same thing again and again you will continue to get ____________.
I said “the same thing”

Then he asked me if I believed that statement, to which I answered “Yes”.  That made him smile and at that moment I knew he was going to teach me a valuable lesson.

He said, let me share little story with you.

Let’s say there are two car dealers in town.  He owned one and I owned one.  Awesome!  We were splitting the market 50/50.  I am making good money, my kids are going to a great school, life is fabulous so I make the decision to continue to do business just as I always have because I am ecstatic with my 50% of the market.

However, on the other side of town Martin decides that his dealership is doing great but he wants to be able to put away money for his grand kids to go to college.  So he decides to do a little extra work, do more marketing, put up a bunch of balloons and he grows his business by 10%.

How much of the market does Martin have now?  60%

I’m still across town chugging along like usual but my 50% just shrank to 40%.  So is the statement still true?  If you continue to do the same thing will you continue to get the same thing?  Not always!

Don’t let you competitors take away your market share!
