Recently released market study: Hong Kong Commercial Banking Report Q1 2011

Dec. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Loan-To-Deposit Ratio Ticking Back Up    While total banking sector deposits have been stagnant in recent months, client loans have risen sharply.  The resultant rise in the loan-to-deposit ratio looks set to continue over the medium term as banks  gradually diversify out of their heavy bond investments. The falling special mention loan ratio faces a  spike over the next 12 months as property price weakness in mainland China spreads to Hong Kong, uncovering loan losses in 2011.      Since revising our annual M3 money supply growth forecast downwards in response to the sharp downturn in the three-month moving average month-on-month growth rate, we have noticed a disconnect in Hong Kong between the rate of growth of domestic money supply, 98% of which is made up of client deposits, and the rate of growth of total banking sector assets and client loans. M3 money supply growth was 1.8% year-on-year (y-o-y) in May 2010, while total banking system assets recorded 3.3% growth and client loans grew by 13.8%. Looking at the three-month moving average monthly growth rate, the divergence is more clear, with M3 growth coming in at an annualised -3.0%, total asset expansion coming in at 9.9% and client loan growth coming in at 22.2%.
