The Counseling Center of New Smyrna Beach Welcomes Dr. Richard Saunders.

Dec. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Dr. Richard Saunders is a Florida licensed psychologist who is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology.  He has recently moved to the New Smyrna area from Annapolis, Maryland, where he was the head of a multi-disciplinary group of mental health professionals.

Dick received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Alabama in 1971, and he
interned at Walter Reed Army Medical Center’s Psychology Service, where he also taught the basic assessment course in the WRAMC teaching hospital setting for over 10 years.  He has been active in several professional groups, serving as President of the Maryland Psychological Association, with elected terms on the Boards of the American Psychological Association’s Divisions of Psychotherapy and Independent Practice.  He has also edited publications in the field of psychology, including the flagship journal of the Division of Psychotherapy, where he continues to review manuscripts and was its Associate Editor for 10 years.  He also served as Editor of the Independent Practitioner, the flagship publication of the APA Division of Independent Practice.

Dr. Saunders thus brings to our staff almost 40 years of professional experience.  He offers services to all age groups, especially psychological assessment services for a variety of  health and mental health purposes, as well as treatment services for adults experiencing anxiety, depression, and interpersonal and relationship difficulties.  He was originally trained in behavior therapy and took course work at Walter Reed in Family Therapy.   He has consulted extensively in the public schools regarding individual educational programs, and with educational accommodations for youngsters up to college age.  He is also experienced in neuropsychological assessment and evaluations of personnel for legal and vocational purposes--such as screening of police officers and other first responders, and security assessments for the US Department of Defense.  He conducts relaxation and meditation training that is often helpful in the care of anxiety and various health conditions, such as chronic pain, and he has conducted numerous pre-surgical bariatric and physiatric health assessments.

Locally, Dick is involved with the Citizens Assisting Police program of the Edgewater Police Department, and he is an active member of the Florida Psychological Association and its Central Florida chapter.  He plans also to join the professional staffs of Bert Fish and Halifax Medical Centers.  Dick is a member of the New Smyrna Yacht Club and attends St. Peter the Fisherman Episcopal Church in NSB.
