Dec. 2, 2010 - PRLog -- Guitar repair guru of Louisville, Ky Chris Rogers recently serviced a used Fender guitar and amp I had purchased on Craigslist. After seeing and hearing the difference in the quality of the sound I became curious about the process and wondered if all guitars needed this kind of setup. I was unaware of any adjustments other than the basic tuning which I tought I could handle...boy, was I wrong.

The quirky music master began to teach me about how weather, shipping, manufacturing processes, and a slew of other things can make a guitar sound bad even if it was new out of the box. He made the comparison of buying a new or used car. Reminding me of how even I had taken a car to a mechanic to make sure the belts were tight, the fluids full, alignment straight, and the like. I was taken back by how much sense this really made. He told me he has never pulled a new guitar out of the box that did sound "right."

When we made it back to the guitar repair shop, nestled in the back of his house, I knew that a great number of hours, years even, had been spent there. The special tools and electronics laid out on the workbench as if they were on display. There was a rather nice Gibson that had a broken neck that was viced and obviously on its way back to being a solid tool of rock. Chris began showing me all the tools and the different adjustments that can be made to really lock in a great sound. I was especially amazed at the professional level tuning electronics he had that were bounds more accurate than the standard twenty dollar tuner.

Having completed the basic  setup curriculum I asked Chris how he liked his fix guitar gig. He told me that he felt "very very lucky" to be doing something he loved so much and was able to support himself doing it. I think we all kind of desire that so I knew he meant every word. Witnessing the level of care he put into every job let me know that he had treated my guitar as if it was one of his own babies.

Chris is offering a 10% savings on any new or newly obtained guitar setups for the holiday season so that people can get those gifts sounding "right" before they are even opened. He told me he would extend the offer through January for those who didn't have time to get to the shop before the big day.
