Dec. 2, 2010 - PRLog -- New research has revealed that computer games have topped a poll of the most wanted Christmas presents this year; with Gran Turismo 5 proving the most popular choice of videogame. Despite many games having an age restriction of 18+, just under a third of parents who took part in the study admitted that they would still purchase them for their younger child.

The research was conducted by http://www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, after the site noticed a high number of Christmas related searches on its website. As a result, the site decided to investigate which items were proving the most popular as gifts this Christmas; polling 1,265 members of the British public to find out what was on their wish list this year.

When respondents were asked “What would you most like for Christmas this year?” 33% admitted that computer games were top of their list; in comparison to 1 in 10, 11%, who said that they would most like new clothes. 6% admitted that a new car would be their ideal gift this year.

Those who stated that they wanted a new computer game for Christmas were asked the multiple-choice question “What game (s) would you most like for Christmas?” 63% admitted that they would like Gran Turismo 5, whilst a further 56% said that they would like Call of Duty: Black Ops. Nintendo DS game Professor Layton and the Lost Future came in sixth place with 43% claiming they would like it for Christmas.

The top ten most wanted computer games this Christmas are:

1.       Gran Turismo 5 – 63%

2.       Call of Duty: Black Ops - 56%

3.       Fifa 11 – 55%

4.       Medal of Honour – 53%

5.       Red Dead Redemption – 49%

6.       Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II – 43%

7.       Professor Layton and the Lost Future – 41%

8.       Assassins Creed: Brotherhood – 36%

9.       Dead Rising – 34%

10.   WWE: Smackdown Vs Raw 2011 – 31%

Just over one in four, 27%, of the people who took part in study were parents. These respondents were then asked, “Do you take notice of age restrictions on computer games, when purchasing them for your child?” to which 76% of the parents taking part answered “no.” Furthermore, 34% of the parents polled by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk stated that they would be buying an 18 certificate game for their child under the age of 16 this Christmas.

Mark Pearson, chairman of http://www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings:

“Computer games always perform well on our site and we are constantly receiving searches for discounts on both games and consoles all year round, but particularly at Christmas. Call of Duty: Black Ops is the must-have game of the year, so it comes as no surprise that it’s near the top of people’s wish list, only narrowly being beaten by the slightly newer Gran Turismo 5.”

He continued:

“I think that parents, however, should be very careful when it comes to purchasing games for underage children; as many can be very graphic in terms of content and violence. Games and films are given age ratings for a reason, and this should be taken into consideration before making a purchase.”
