By: Balletsa Inc Michele Paiva The emotional atmosphere of the Wachovia Spectrum demolition on November 23rd at noon, was symbolic of both honoring the past as well as anticipating the future. During the ceremony, basketball icon, Julius Erving spoke, reminicing on fans, being welcomed to Philadelphia, reflecting upon professional memories and the farewell tour. He speaks of the dash between dates of 1967-2009. He said that a friend explained to him what the dash meant; the dash is “everything in between”. He recalled a fan coming toward him with a doctors bag “(Dr. J), was his welcome, his farewell tour, his end date, but the dash between he mentioned, “too numerous to mention” of the many points to remember of his great years at the spectrum. Bobby Clark emotionally spoke, “Thank to Mr. Snider that gave us the Spectrum that was home to so many of us.” Then, Bernie Parent took the podium, with a zesty, “How about those Flyers” and the crowd roared...he continued with the sharing that he felt Snider was a man with a vision, who did not let critiques or set backs stop him. Parents upcoming book outlines pioneer visions such as this; helping others unleash their potental. Bernie Parent, a man who had overcome much in his life including a language barrier, blindness, injuries and more, watched with intensity as the wrecking ball pounded the place of his two-time Stanley Cup win as well as many other memories. He credits Ed Snider with much of his success and holds strong respect for those who follow their vision. Parents dedication to purpose, vision and dreams is apparent in his farewell speech to the Spectrum. The Spectrum as a building was is as strong as the athletes that played there, as the wrecking ball had a hard time making a dent in the Spectrum. The building may crumble but the dreams and memories will never be turn to dust. For more information about Bernie Parent, his upcoming book and appearances; www.michelepaiva.com End
