New York City Values Drinking Water

Nov. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- Mayor Bloomberg of New York City apparently finds the drinking of fresh water to be so important that he has presented a new program that will make it possible to find a nice cool drink anywhere in the city. He has developed a new system that will install and maintain 10 new portable water fountains in public spaces throughout the city.

The program called ‘Water-on-the-Go’ makes it possible for New Yorkers to get healthy water which will keep them from becoming dehydrated while making their rounds throughout the parks. Their pets will be able to access water as well. The current program provides water to 8.4 million people in the city and is healthy, fresh, affordable, and environmentally correct.

The portable water fountains will be transported from place to place and each will be in a designated park at the same time each week so park goers can count on the water to be there for them when they walk, jog, or bike through the park. Some of the locations that will be serviced are Union Square Greenmarket, the Times Square Public Plaza, and the Broadway Greenmarket.

Special events will also have the use of these innovative refreshment centers for the duration of the event. The Weekend Walks in Staten Island and the Bronx will have them delivered by the city workers. They will deliver them, set them up, and then remove them at the end of the day.

The water in New York City is clearer than in many places throughout the country because it comes from a huge system of aqueducts, water mains, and tunnels. The city is very protective of their watershed and has a very strict policy to maintain it at the highest levels. The water is drawn from upstate and travels through 7,000 miles of water pipe and aqueduct.

Part of the purpose of this project is to reduce the number of plastic disposable water bottles going to the landfill dump. With the portable clear water fountains rotating throughout the city people can fill up their water bottles and the disposable ones will be reduced in their usage.

The program has a website up that tells residents when and where the mobile fresh water units will be at any given time. The website has a full listing of locations and times and the program runs through summer months through the Labor Day weekend.
