Nov. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- PENNSYLVANIA and PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia, PA dental implants expert Dr. David DiGiallorenzo promotes the Great American Smokeout in his Philadelphia, PA periodontics offices each year.

The Great American Smokeout- sponsored by the American Cancer Society-is Nov. 18. Its goal is to encourage smokers to quit for a day, in hope that it leads to quitting for life, according to the ACS website.

DiGiallorenzo and the other Philadelphia PA dental implants (http://www.perioimplants.us/) in his practice encourage participation in the annual event because they see what smoking does to patients’ periodontal health.

The American Academy of Periodontology said smokers are more likely than nonsmokers to have oral health issues including.
•   Calculus.
•   Deep pockets between teeth and gums.
•   Bone and tissue loss that supports teeth.

Calculus not removed during professional cleanings remains below the gum line, said the Philadelphia, PA periodontist (http://www.24-7pressrelease.com/press-release/philadelphi...). Bacteria in calculus can destroy gum tissue and cause gums to recede. Periodontal pockets then develop and become filled with disease-causing bacteria.
If not treated, periodontal disease progresses and teeth may become loose, painful and even fall out.
DiGiallorenzo uses Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure to treat periodontal disease. LANAP is an office procedure that is less invasive, nearly painless and requires no cutting and suturing, he said.

“Unless you quit smoking, treating periodontal disease will remain an uphill battle,” DiGiallorenzo said. “That’s why we encourage smokers to participate in the Smokeout November 18. Devoting a day to improved health could be the spark that encourages them to quit smoking for good.”
