Today mentoring is defined as the transmission or sharing of knowledge, social capital and support. Mike Ferrell, president of The Pinecrest Group and author of the award-winning business planning book, Ultimate Breakthrough Planning: The Business Funnel Approach does just that as he works with the Minnesota National Guard and their  Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program.

The Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program is a support program that focuses on service members and their families. Within this program were a menagerie of ad hoc programs. The National Guard was experiencing a lack of focus on the most important programs and the ability to mange them well so they looked to Mike Ferrell for the needed training and assistance with his unique Business Funnel Approach.

Over a two-day period, Ferrell provided the best of his mentoring by taking them through the business planning funnel process which was centered around getting focused. This resulted in the development of a strategic action plan that is now being implemented throughout the Minnesota National Guard.
