New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

Oct. 31, 2010 - PRLog -- BMI's latest update on Vietnam's telecommunications market saw slight revisions to our forecasts, based on the latest figures released by operators and regulators. Competition in the country's mobile sector is forecast to intensify amidst aggressive tariff reductions and the expected launch of commercial services by MVNO Indochina and VietnamMultimedia Corporation (VTC) in late 2010 or 2011. However, we predict that the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) could attempt to another prepaid subscriber registration exercise to remove inactive subscribers from operators' customer base again in the medium term, after it only managed to deduct 2mn subscribers in January 2010.

Meanwhile, internet user growth in 2009 was largely restricted partially due to the economic downturn that impacted private consumption. The latest figures released by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) for the first seven months of 2010 suggest to us that growth rates are returning to the pre-crisis level, thus we have revised our forecasts upwards. On the other hand, short term demand for the more premium broadband services is not expected to accelerate in the remaining of 2010, which has led to the downward revision in our forecasts for this segment.

The relatively low level of fixed network infrastructure in Vietnam has meant that wireless technologies are developing as an important platform for delivering fixed broadband services. The first WiMAX project was initiated in February 2006 and several trial licences were awarded over the next four years. In September 2010, Vietnam saw its first LTE trials when Russia's Antaras reached an agreement with Vietnam Datacommunications Company to build a trial LTE network. Testing of 15 LTE base transceiver stations would begin on October 20 2010 in Hanoi and the trial period is expected to last two to three months. In the same month, the MIC issued LTE licences to five operators - Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications, Viettel, FPT Telecom, CMC Telecom and VTC.

However, competition between operators continued to intensify as telecoms companies initiated another round of tariff reductions in August 2010. Based on the current trend, the Ministry of Finance predicts that mobile charges in Vietnam could be the lowest in the world by 2015. This has negatively impacted the country's Industry Rewards score and Vietnam fell from 15th place to 17th in BMI's latest Asia Pacific Business Environment Ratings table. Bangladesh and Thailand overtook Vietnam and the country is only ahead of Sri Lanka in the region.
