Hyundai Sonata & BMW 5 Series Made 5-star Ratings On Federal Crash Tests

Oct. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- The Hyundai Sonata and BMW’s 5 Series were the only two 2011 models to receive an overall 5-star rating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) new safety evaluations.

Since vehicles have become safer than ever, tougher federal crash tests for 2011 models have been enforced along with new procedures like including, for the first time, a female dummy and a side crash into a pole, making it harder to get top 5-star scores.

"More stars equal safer cars," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told the Associated Press. "Through new tests, better crash data and higher standards, we are making the safety ratings tougher and more meaningful for consumers."

Each vehicle received a 1 through 5 score on its ability to withstand frontal and side impacts, and a third scores measures the model’s rollover risk. Since so many vehicles had reached the highest potential rating under the old criteria, the standards needed to be raised.

“In the individual tests and just two of the first 34 vehicles tested the new way earned a 5-star overall score: the 2011 BMW 5 Series and the 2011 Hyundai Sonata,” according to USA Today.

Toughened procedures included more sizes of dummies and a side pole test to ensure electronic stability control is working. Since the scores had become so frequent, the NHTSA gave consumers a chance to review the vehicles with more information based on your size, passengers and driving condition.
