Market Report, "Uganda Telecommunications Report Q4 2010", published

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

Sept. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- BMI's latest update on Uganda's telecommunications market contains revised forecast figures for the country's fixed-line telephony and broadband subscriber markets. This quarter also sees some slight revisions to our mobile subscriber growth forecast. Our new forecasts are based on year-end data published by the country's telecoms regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). Our forecasts also incorporate data published by two of Uganda's mobile network operators, specifically, MTN Uganda, part of South Africa's MTN Group, and Orange Uganda, owned by France Telecom.

Based on the available data, we estimate that Uganda's mobile subscriber base grew by 3.6% in the first three months of 2010 to surpass 11mn at the end of March. Despite the market contractions which were experienced in Q409, we believe that the first quarter of 2010 brought relatively healthy growth. According to local media reports, both Zain Uganda and Warid Telecom experienced positive customer growth in the first few months of 2009, fuelled by the introduction of new services and promotions. Going forward, we cautiously predict that Uganda's mobile subscriber base will expand by 23% in 2010 to surpass 13mn at the end of the year. Although compulsory SIM registration may result in a fall in mobile customers, ongoing investments by the operators should help to promote underlying growth. We also predict that 2010 will see the intensification of a new price war between the operators, especially between MTN and Zain. In March 2010, India's Bharti Airtel completed its acquisition included Zain Uganda. Following its acquisition, Bharti announced plans to invest US$100mn in expanding its network in Uganda. Such investments are likely to result in a new wave of competition between MTN and Zain.

For its part, MTN Uganda revealed in July 2010 that China's Huawei Technologies had completed the deployment of a 3.5G network for the operator. MTN already offers 3G-compatible handsets to its customers including the BlackBerry. The launch of 3G network services by MTN should help to stimulate this much-neglected segment of Uganda's mobile market. Prior to the launch of 3G services by MTN Uganda, incumbent operator Uganda Telecom (UTL) was thought to be the only operator offering 3G mobile services. However, Orange Uganda offers 3G-enabled handsets to its customers, including the iPhone which the operator launched in December 2009. Orange recently unveiled a new strategy which will see the operator place mobile internet services at the centre of its expansion strategy in Uganda. Although the number of mobile broadband subscribers is currently thought to be small, the future growth potential from this segment is believed to be high. BMI's newly-updated broadband subscriber forecast for Uganda assesses the long-term impact of mobile broadband services on the telecoms market.

This quarter sees the introduction of new terminology to describe the different categories surveyed within BMI's Telecoms Business Environment Ratings. BMI undertook this change in order to standardise the Business Environment Ratings across different industry sectors. Uganda continues to sit in 7th position in our latest set of business ratings for sub-Saharan Africa.
