Follow on Google News | Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day - September 8, 2010The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) announces the establishment of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day September 8, 2010.
By: Assn. of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses According to APHON President Deb Echtenkamp, pediatric hematology/oncology nurses are constantly striving to learn best practices, contribute to and advance the field of knowledge, and share the vision of a cancer and blood disorder free-future. “Each day, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses care for many of our most precious patients: children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer and blood disorders,” Echtenkamp said. “These special nurses are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to their patients and families. Often, that care extends beyond their physical health, to include emotional support and long term follow-up treatment as they mature into adults.” “September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness month. What a fine complement to that month, should we establish a day recognizing those nurses who care for the day-to-day needs of children with cancer and blood disorders, guiding families through the most difficult circumstances anyone can experience,” Texas is the first state to officially recognize Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day. On June 28, Governor Rick Perry officially recognized Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day saying, “As pediatric hematology and oncology nurses, you help protect our state’s most precious resource – our children. You put your experience and training into action, helping young Texans overcome cancer and blood disorders and grow into healthy, successful adults. I know these children, and their loved ones, are eternally grateful. You are true Texan heroes, and I thank you for your hard work and dedication.” # # # APHON is the professional organization for pediatric hematology/oncology nurses and other pediatric hematology/oncology healthcare professionals.
