Aug. 31, 2010 - PRLog -- It is rare for patients to complain about their bite and yet bite related problems are commonly involved in all the routine diseases we treat in dentistry.  Every time a cavity is filled, a crown is placed, a tooth is removed or orthodontically moved, an implant restored, or a new tooth erupts, the potential is there for patients to suffer problems with their bite.

Occlusal disease is   the collective term for all signs and symptoms created by disharmony and dysfunction within the masticatory system.   Diagnosis is fundamental to ensure patients retain their teeth for life.  At Clarendon House Dental Centre (http://www.clarendonhousedentalcentre.co.uk) patients are screened for occlusal disease during dental examination appointments.

The signs and symptoms of bite related problems may include one or all of the following:
•   Broken fillings or corners of enamel breaking away
•   Tooth grinding and worn/sensitive teeth
•   Tooth loss where the bone under pressure gets slowly destroyed, accelerating gum disease.
•   Enamel being worn off teeth and exposing the sensitive dentine.
•   Headaches, jaw or neck pain, pain in the facial muscles.

Dr Chris French (http://www.clarendonhousedentalcentre.co.uk/meet-the-team...) said  ‘We can often resolve patient’s troubles without drilling any teeth.  Clear plastic occlusal appliances allow us to provide patients with occlusal harmony and get the uncomfortable muscles to relax’ ‘Technology continues to advance in this area of dentistry, a T-Scan (an electronic bite force sensor) comfortably shaped to fit the arch of the mouth allows me to record and go on to make detailed adjustments to help balance the way the teeth contact for the optimum physiologic bite.

Patients are often pleasantly surprised how a few simple painless adjustments can have such a beneficial effect, here are just some of the comments we have received from our patients:

   ‘the effects of the treatment were amazing and almost instantaneous’.
   the whole process was a painless experience resulting with the best condition of my dental life’.
   ‘All of the symptoms I had on waking disappeared, almost immediately, I no longer woke with aching jaws and a stiff neck and feel better rested than ever before’. ‘
