Hot Summer Temperatures Keep Air Conditioners Working but Creates IAQ Problems for Some

UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI) technology prevents contamination of homes and buildings by eliminating mold, bacteria and viruses from HVAC systems.

Aug. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Modern air conditioners improve indoor climates by lowering the air temperature and humidity to comfortable settings.  Recently, record temperatures in many parts of the country have resulted in nonstop usage of air conditioning equipment to provide building occupants much needed relief.

During hot spells in the summer, many people spend the majority of their time indoors.    Today’s air conditioners provide relief for millions of Americans and have become an essential part of life.  But for all the comfort air conditioning provides, unfortunately, it also can cause health problems.  Most air conditioners remove moisture from the air and the dry air is vented back throughout the building.  This can cause people to experience issues ranging from irritated throats and nasal passages to itchy skin.

Improperly maintained air conditioners can also become breeding grounds for mold and bacteria.  Microbial contamination can invade cooling coils and drain pans and rapidly multiply.  Contamination is not readily visible to the building occupants because the infected components are hidden, but spores and particulates loaded with microbial contaminants are blown into the airstream and distributed throughout the building.  Sometimes, a musty odor known as “dirty sock smell” provides a tell tale sign of contamination.

UVDI, a leading provider of advanced ultraviolet (UV) disinfection products for air and surfaces, has designed products to specifically eliminate mold, bacteria and viruses from cooling coils and drain pans in HVAC systems.  These products eliminate microbial growth and prevent contamination of residential, commercial and institutional facilities.

“Properly applied, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) efficiently disinfects air and surfaces and helps keep building occupants safe, comfortable and healthy,” reports Paul Cochrane, Public Relations Manager for UVDI. “UVDI’s technology also lowers HVAC maintenance costs and reduces energy consumption thus providing multiple benefits for building occupants and property owners.”
