The Power of Social Media: Pure Power, Leo DeCaprio and Inception

They say that the fluttering of butterfly wings in the Philippines can result in a hurricane across the Pacific. This tenet of chaos theory provides an irresistible parallel to a social media storm that erupted last week over an interview with Leo DiCaprio in … you guessed it … the Philippine Inquirer.

In the interview, Leo was quoted as saying about his current blockbuster hit, “A lot of this movie (‘Inception’) was made with solar power. It’s the first movie I got to do with solar power. I had a conversation about it with Alan Horn, who’s the head of Warner Bros. The generators that we had on the set were all powered by solar energy. It’s going to be a big conversion to do stuff like that every day, not just in making movies but everything in the world. … Hopefully, fingers crossed, with these small steps, we’ll make that transition on a much larger scale in the future.”

Back in May Michael d’Estries at Ecorazzi had posted “Warner Bros Powering Film Sets With Massive Mobile Solar System” about how Pure Power had provided its “S48” Mobile Solar Power System to power the Inception base camp the production was shooting in LA. After the Philippine story, d’Estries posts an update “DiCaprio Brought Solar Power To ‘Inception’ Set”, quoting the DiCaprio article. DiCaprio links to that Ecorazzi post on his Facebook and Twitter pages, and posts pictures of the solar generator and the Solar Starwaggon used on the base camp. Ecorazzi posts the Facebook link, and within a few days the story had propagated across the web to more than 50 sites, including Forbes, The Huffington Post, Treehugger (right in front of Chelsea’s wedding, no less!)

There may be a debate about professional reporting versus blogging, but the power of bloggers and their followers can not be underestimated.
