Follow on Google News | Fingers cut off on Bauer CompressorI darn near lost my fingers whilst repairing a SCUBA Compressor. I’m the dummy.
By: Larry Kaplan, Compressor Coach (tm) This happened innocently while following advice from a specialist on high-pressure compressors. I was inspecting the cooling tubes on my Bauer Compressor, leaning over the machine, when my pants got caught up in the power switch – thus turning it to ON. The sight of blood suddenly raining everywhere was ghastly! I didn’t even know what was going on or how it happened. Later, when re-enacting the mishap for my wife, we unraveled the scenario. Truth is it could have ended much worse. Except for the tips, the doctors did save my fingers and all is well now. I have to say, too, that I was warned several times to make sure and turn off the power main and depressurize everything before going to work on it. You know us ‘guys’ though, we always know better. We get lazy and we take short cuts. My incident was definitely a short cut – or maybe I mean to say that ‘my fingers have been cut short’. Joking aside, please learn from this fellow’s experience. Turn off the power and disable any other potential source of hazard such as air pressure.
