Several Biotech stocks today showed some positive traction with relatively little happening after the GDP numbers were released this morning. Athersys  was definitely the most active of the bunch after announcing positive Phase I data from a study for their stem cell product MultiStem in the treatment of heart damage caused by heart attack. WBB Securities promptly upgraded ATHX from “buy” to “strong buy.”

The top five percentage gainers from the biotechnology sector:

Athersys  was up 7% to $3.12 per share on heavy volume
Curis  was up 8% to $1.75 per share on moderate volume
Threshold Pharmaceuticals  was up 12% to $1.52 per share on light volume
AVEO Pharmaceuticals  was up 8% to $7.72 per share on light volume
CombiMatrix  was up 6% to $2.87 per share on light volume
Even though the volume was relatively light, as it always is on a Friday, the biotech sector offered investors a chance to get some good buys and capitalize on a quiet market.
