Quality new-home construction practices and the commitment by one local builder to take a more sustainable approach to building have resulted in an eco-savvy new home neighborhood that saves homeowners money.

At Rockrose at The Foothills in Carlsbad, builder Brookfield Homes (http://www.BrookfieldSD.com) has incorporated numerous tactics for energy-efficiency and water conservation, saving homeowners money on their utilities. According to an analysis of a Residence 2 bill prepared by San Diego Gas & Electric, Rockrose homeowners may save more than $1,000 per year on their electricity bills as compared to a home built 10 years ago.

Here are some of the money-saving features included in the new home neighborhood:

1)   Drought-tolerant front yard landscaping requires minimal watering
2)   Low-flow shower heads and WaterSense faucets reduce water usage
3)   Tankless water heaters and recirculating lines minimize the wait for water to get hot, thereby saving water
4)   Radiant barrier roof sheathing keeps home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, lowering air conditioning and heating bills year-round
5)   Low-E windows further insulate your home against heat and cold
6)   Florescent lighting in select interior and exterior locations burns as bright but uses 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs

With every home exceeding California’s energy standards by at least 35 percent, Rockrose offers the most energy-efficient new homes in San Diego County, and Brookfield Homes is the first and only builder in San Diego County with production homes at these increased efficiency levels.

When Rockrose opened earlier this year, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took note.

“Rockrose not only generates jobs and homes for Californians, it also sets a new standard in creating sustainable communities. Whether in construction materials, energy sources, landscaping and more, every facet of this project aims to make California an even better – and greener – place to call home,” said a proclamation from Gov. Schwarzenegger’s office on March 23, 2010.

In addition to water and energy savings that add up every month, Rockrose at The Foothills offers environmentally friendly amenities that improve air quality, including Merv 8 air filters, low VOC carpets and paints, formaldehyde free insulation and options like electrostatic air filters.

“Indoor air quality is important to San Diegans,” said Jan Cortez, executive director of the American Lung Association’s San Diego office.  “It’s great to see a model home that is energy efficient and progressive but also is a healthful home. We want to use this model as a project to educate the community.”

Besides its sustainable features, Rockrose is ideally located within a few miles of schools, shopping and recreation, which minimizes time on the road and fuel costs for a family.

Upon completion, Rockrose at The Foothills will feature 101 single-family detached homes ranging from 2,116 to 3,167 square feet. Prices range from the mid $600,000s. For more information, visit http://www.BrookfieldSD.com, or call 888-284-8861.
