July 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Facebook users worldwide cast votes for their favorite US-based charities in the Chase Community Giving Campaign June 15- July 12 with the Top 200 vote-getters sharing in $5 million in grants.

Girl Power 2 Cure, a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness and research funds for Rett Syndrome, finished 17th out of over 500,000 eligible charities to win a $20,000 grant from Chase.

The campaign put the Rett Syndrome story in front of over 2.5 million Facebook voters and provided an opportunity for Rett Syndrome families nationwide to reach out to their local communities.  Kelly Butler, Girl Power 2 Cure Program Director said, “Families were able to educate their neighbors, raise awareness, and, most importantly, strengthen their communities' connection to their daughters through this vote campaign.”

“We are thrilled to receive this grant from Chase at a time when we are in rapid growth with our new Garden of Hope Program,” said Ingrid Harding, Founder and President.

“This grant will help us kick off our big campaign to work with girls’ groups and businesses nationwide to cultivate and grow paper flower Gardens of Hope, taking every dollar and growing it tenfold before granting it to the Rett Sydrome Research Trust’s research program.

“Like a flower, we aim to have every dollar coming into Girl Power 2 Cure growing, not shrinking, before funding research,” said Harding.

In addition to votes, Facebook users were also able to sign up to get more involved with organizations of their choosing. Close to 400 people signed up to join Girl Power 2 Cure’s efforts.

Harding added, “What a great bonus to have this fresh list of volunteers with the grant. We are excited to reach out to them to help us reach our goal of growing 1,000 Gardens of Hope this October for Rett Syndrome Awareness Month.”

About Rett Syndrome
Rett Syndrome is the most severe form of autism and the leading genetic cause of severe impairment in females. The condition randomly strikes another young girl every 90 minutes, leaving them unable to speak, walk or use their hands. In 2007, research proved the syndrome is reversible in mice. Medical experts consider Rett Syndrome research the key to understanding related disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
