July 8, 2010 - PRLog -- PHILADELPHIA, PA – On August 23-25, 2010, industry scientists, CEOs, and academics will convene at Philadelphia’s Four Seasons Hotel for the Ubiquitin Drug Discovery and Diagnostics Conference to discuss the Next Big Thing (http://www.ubiquitinconference.com/pdf/Next_big_thing_in_Drug_development_UPS_2010-1.pdf) in drug discovery research—the ubiquitin pathway. Advances in oncology, infectious diseases, neurodegeneration, inflammation, diabetes, and muscle wasting will be covered.

The list of distinguished speakers includes:

•   Alfred L. Goldberg, PhD, Harvard Medical School; the father of protein-turnover
•   Kenneth Anderson, PhD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; an imminent clinical oncologist
•   Peter G. Smith, PhD, Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Co.; new cancer therapies
•   Ben Nicholson, PhD, Progenra Inc.; profiling cancer therapies
•   Michele Pagano, PhD, New York University; charting the function of E3 ligases
•   Jennifer Johnston, PhD, Elan Pharmaceuticals Inc.; targets in neurodegenerative disease

The agenda focuses on basic science, translational research and drug discovery within the ubiquitin pathway. It includes two technology-driven workshop sessions, four conference sessions, and three business roundtables facilitating collaboration across sectors.

In the business roundtables discussions, participants will explore new avenues of collaboration: “Biotech and Pharma Partnership: The new face of the industry;” “Academic and Industry Partnership: Translational research;” and the “Role of NIH in Drug Discovery”—Dr. Christopher P. Austin of the National Human Genome Research Institute will guide this final discussion.
