Lake District Mountain Rescue launches safety leaflet initiative

July 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Numbers of mountain rescue incidents within the Lakes continue to rise.  

2009 saw a total of 553 incidents across the county, 20% up on 2008.  Up to 1st June 2010 numbers of callouts continue every bit as busy with Keswick Mmountain Rescue Team undertaking 59 full team rescues (compared to 57 in 2009) along with another 11 alerts, and Langdale Ambleside undertaking 51 full team rescues (compared to 55 in 2009).

In a further attempt to reduce the numbers of avoidable incidents, LDSAMRA is pleased to announce the new ’How to Stay Safe and Enjoy the Fells’ leaflet. 80,000 copies of the pocket-sized leaflets are being distributed across the county, and will soon be found in most popular tourist areas.  

“The leaflet is intended to help people make the right choices before going into the hills,” said Richard Warren, LDSAMRA Chairman.  “It also provides key information on what to do in the event of an accident.  It will be available in numerous outlets throughout Cumbria and the Lake District and would be a very helpful addition to anyone’s rucksack when they head into the fells.”

Lesley Williams, from Cicerone, said: “Supporting charities directly associated with mountain activities is a vital part of our role as responsible guidebook publishers and we are delighted to sponsor this information leaflet.”

LDSAMRA is looking to continue the partnership with Cicerone for future publications with the aim of reducing casualty numbers through free and available mountain rescue information.

“We want to encourage people to enjoy the fells,” said Richard, “but to do it safely, understanding the risks and taking the right precautions.”
