Window Tinting in NYC & Long Island - The Current Laws and Controversy

Window tinting laws in NYC and Long Island have become much more strict over the last 5 years. These days, residents' windows are only allowed to be a fraction as dark as they used to be.

June 24, 2010 - PRLog -- Although many of us get our car windows tinted because of the sharp looks, it can actually be very beneficial to both us, and our vehicles. Certain types of window film can block up to 99% of UV rays, protecting a persons skin as well as the car's interior from the harsh NYC and Long Island sun. Window tint can also block up to 80% of Infrared light, which can be equally as damaging. Aside from protection, some people just like the privacy, and the looks of dark windows. These beneficial traits of window film have been a large part of the arguments of NYC and Long Island residents as to why the current window tinting laws are too strict.

As of 2010, the laws in NYC and Long Island for window tint on vehicles is as follows:

Front Windshield - You are allowed non-reflective window film only on the top 6 inches.

Front & Backside Windows - Your tint must allow at least 71% of light in (29% dark or less)

Back Windshield - Any darkness is allowed

Although, these laws may seem reasonable to some, many residents of NYC and Long Island feel that they are restrictive, pointless and just plain ridiculous. They argue that less than 30% darkness is virtually nothing, and that the law should allow more than that. It is most disturbing to people who want tinted windows strictly for the looks. Less than 30% darkness in window film is easily seen through, and gives the car owner much less privacy than they would like.

However in the state's defense, these laws do not prevent anyone from protecting themselves or their vehicle from the sun. Although far more expensive, there are many types of window film that are virtually 100% clear, but are still able to block UV rays and Infrared light.

Many window tinting services in NYC and Long Island agree that the current laws regarding window tint on vehicles are a bit much. In order to not let the laws affect their businesses, most of these window tinting companies still offer illegal tint, but make you sign a waiver acknowledging that you are aware of the laws upon receiving the service.
