However, there is another way: sedation dentistry – also known as relaxation dentistry, oral sedation dentistry, or anxiety-free dentistry.

Sedation dentistry can be used in both general and cosmetic dentistry procedures, including teeth cleaning, root canals, and even smile makeovers. The first step is to visit your dentist, who will help you decide on the needed treatment. Then your dentist will prescribe Valium, Ativan, Sonata, or similar medicines.

During the procedure, the dentist monitors your vital signs with a pulse oximeter or blood pressure monitor. Although adverse drug reactions and other emergencies are extremely uncommon, the dentist needs to be careful.

When you are more relaxed, your dentist can get more done in one visit – making it less likely that you will need a second visit to finish up. Some medicines even have amnesiac properties, so you may have little or no memory of the treatment. And, the day after, you’ll feel like yourself again – but with a more beautiful smile.
