Earthquake Kits have become essential throughout the world. Though is seems like there are more earthquakes then usual, according to the United State Geological Survey (USGS) we are currently experiencing the normal or typical amount of earthquakes.

Earthquake Preparedness and as well as preparing for all types of natural or man-made disasters is highly recommended by FEMA, The Red Cross, Federal and local governments. Being self sufficient for at least 72 hours after a disaster is crucial. Having an Earthquake kit or survival kit and having a disaster plan in place before a disaster, has been proven to decrease fears and save lives. At http://www.survivalkitsonline.com we help people to prepare for both man mad and natural disasters.

SAFEST PLACE IN THE HOME:

During an earthquake, stay away from heavy furniture, appliances, windows, shelves, and fireplaces. These items tend to fall or break and can injure you. Usually, a hallway is one of the safest places if it is not crowded with objects. Kitchens and garages tend to be the most dangerous. Before an earthquake occurs, find the safest place in each room. This includes your workplace and when you are away from home. It just takes a few seconds to look around in an unfamiliar building to size it up and locate a place where you will the safest. It will be difficult to move from one place to another during a severe earthquake. So knowing your options ahead of time is essential.

EXITS AND ALTERNATIVE EXITS:

Always know all the possible ways to exit your house and work place in emergencies. Locate exits that may only be available to you in an emergency. When you are in an unfamiliar building, find another exit besides the front door of the establishment. Most likely, everyone will rush for the front door and not realize that there is a second exit. After the earthquake occurs, and it is safe exit though the safest exit.

LOCATION OF SHUT-OFF VALVES:

Know the location of the shut-off valves for water, gas, and electricity, and how to operate the valves. If you are not sure, contact your utility company.

MAKE SPECIAL PROVISIONS ELDERLY, DISABLED, OR PERSONS UNDER MEDICATION:

These people may have difficulty moving around after an earthquake. Make arrangements ahead of time to have someone help him or her to evacuate if necessary. Often times a neighbor or relative living close may be the best choice as a designated assistant. In addition, the person with special needs may require special foods or medication. Be sure to store several days’ supply of these special provisions and let the designated helper know where these supplies are stored.

PERSONS WHO DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH:

People who do not speak English often rely on their family or friends for information. If they are separated during an earthquake, they may need help. Prepare emergency information cards, written in English, indicating identification, address, and special needs.

PETS:

Have a pet survival kit ready and available for each pet. Keep pets in a secure place at home after an earthquake. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you must evacuate, pets most likely  will not be allowed at the emergency shelter. Make prior arrangements to have your pets stay at a friend’s or relative’s house which is not in the evacuation area. You should also contact your veterinarian and ask them if they have the ability to house your pet. During hurricane Katrina many people we told to leave there pets behind as they would not be welcome in the evacuation shelters. Please make arrangements for your pets before a disaster so you are not forced to abandon you pet. Many dogs and cats either became homeless or died as a result of leaving them behind after the hurricane.
