ABOUT 88’s CABARET: Producer and host Ryan Black started 88’s Cabaret three years ago in his “spare” time so he would have a creative outlet for performers to feel free to artistically express not only their talents but their views on today’s society. Black, a former full time actor himself, found that his producing schedule didn’t allow him to perform anymore. Black’s full time job is running Ryan & Co. Entertainment, a full service production company that has produced live events, concerts and television for the past 10 years. Black and his company have produced shows & events with the likes of Elton John, Sting, Alicia Keys, Tom Ford, Gucci, BMG, and most recently the live telecast of the Miss California pageant and Black is currently in development on a show for Ms. Diana Ross with his partner Dana Miller. Black wanted to start 88’s as a way that would help him fill the performing void in his life and a show he’d have complete control over. “So often I’m answering to clients and have little creative control over a lot of the stuff I produce. I just wanted a little world of my own.” Little did he know that world would turn into what readers of Frontiers magazine voted the “Best Show in L.A” in 2009. Black just wanted it to be a fun show filled with his amazingly talented friends that could perform and not feel the pressure of being judged. Although he has always encouraged publicity to get the word out, Black does not encourage the show to be reviewed. “For me this is a place performers should feel free to safely express what they want to without being judged”. “Because we do this show on our “off” time, the shows are often put together at the last minute. Singers perform songs they might not ordinarily be able to sing in the real world of music and theatre. So we want it to be a safe haven for them to perform whatever they want, even if they learned it last night.” ABOUT 88’s UTH CHARITY: Black wanted 88’s to be more and mean more. So he started 88’s Uth, a youth mentoring program. “We gave our first $500 youth performance scholarship to young man at a show for Sam Harris. This allowed him to attend performing arts camp and pursue his dreams of studying music. Last year 88’s raised over $30,000 to provide scholarships for youth studying music. Thanks in part to Deborah Gibson and her Gibson Girl Foundation. 88’s Uth has fulfilled the dreams of kids as well as dreams I never knew I had.” 88’s Cabaret has helped raise almost $100,000 for charities. In a fundraising night Black produced for Leeza Gibbons and her Foundation, they were able to raise over $40,000. “It was a concert in tribute to Kenny “Babyface” 88’s is working on getting their 501(C)(3)status, but until then continues to raise money through other charities. “I never intended for this to be charitable. I wanted to create little shows that would inspire people. Music is such a powerful thing. It can motivate you, it can inspire you and I truly think it can change the world. For 88’s to be able to give back through charity is just an added bonus. If it can keep inspiring people and get performers jobs and mentor youth, then I’ll keep on doing it” Black says. “We don’t always profit on these shows. I sometimes spend 60 hours or more a month on one show and even sold out we break even. Most often I even end up putting money into the show. It’s probably why there aren’t a lot of these types of shows in Los Angeles. They’re definitely not going to interest Big Business executives. I try to adjust admission prices every so often to make it affordable. I’m still amazed we’ve stayed afloat and continue to sell out even through a horrible economy. We always do our shows on Mondays when most performers are free from a schedule which makes it even more challenging. The audiences keep coming though and the performers are really what make these nights incredible.” 88’s can be found on Facebook as Ryan Black’s 88’s Cabaret and on Myspace at www.myspace.com/ # # # WKC is a full service boutique public and media relations agency specializing in lifestyle products.
