With an army of pet rescue services in the US why do we still euthanize Millions of lost pets a year

With 5 to 7 million lost pets entering animal shelters each year, 3 to 4 million of them are being euthanized, according to the ASPCA website. With out the hundreds of privately operated rescue services trying to help, what would that number be?

May 8, 2010 - PRLog -- To view the photo of hundreds of cats and dogs euthanized  piled up in a land fill breaks my heart. Please don't tell me that we as a society view these pets as throw away's.   Simply a replaceable commodity, lose one buy another. I want to think that our system is broke and needs repaired but the truth of the matter is that we do not have a system at all. Talk to any Animal Shelter worker, Rescue service provider and they will all tell you that the majority of pets that enter the system is due to a lack of current accessible contact information. A collar, pet tags or some way to identify the owner of the lost pet.  There is an army of great rescue services that I am in contact with through Facebook, I have listed some below. There are hundreds of these selfless pet lovers giving of their time and resources to help protect the most vulnerable amongst us, our pets. We will never stem the tide of wholesale euthanization of lost pets until we address the root problem, the availability of current contact information attached to every pet. Why should this be so hard to do with all that is available to pet owners, micro chipping, license tag and pet ID tags. The truth is because they don't work properly, if they did we wouldn't have this enormous problem. Manufacturers have put greed before our pets survival.  Here is a 21st century solution, lets have a pet tag that weighs an ounce that has a 10 second recorder in it and when your pet gets lost the person or agency that finds your lost pet can press a play button and hear your contact information that "you" recorded.  This will be good but as a safety feature why don't we have an 8 digit number assigned to each pet and have it printed on the pet tag recorder as well. This will enable any person who finds your pet to simply go to an online Pet Registry to look up your pet and view the contact information that you, the pet owner, has entered.  The pet registry should be free and the owner of the pet should be able to up date the contact information as many times without cost. The information held on the pet registry should include pet's name, breed, distinctive markings, was it micro chipped and the number, Vet's name and phone number, health issues, a place for comments, full contact information of the owner and it should also have a photo of the pet.  This system should be National and accessible from any computer so that anyone anywhere can find your pet and contact you in minutes not days or not at all. The vast majority of lost pets are found by pet lovers in our community but are given up to Animal Control to be placed on death row. Isn't it about time to give those "Good Samaritan" the tools needed to relocate lost pet to owner!  The last item is to make this system affordable to every pet owner, $29.95 for a lifetime of protection, seems reasonable for all that I had described. A lifetime of protection implies that it should also be transferable from one pet to another in the event of a pet's death and I could not agree more. That system is in place and  saving thousands of pets lives right now, http://petvoice.net  PetVoice Pet Recovery System is the first National Pet Recovery System totally accessible and maintained by you the pet owner and lover.
