April 8, 2010 - PRLog -- The town of Stellenbosch has proved to be of significant value to the upcoming FIFA 2010 World Cup football tournament. World-class soccer training facilities at Stellenbosch University’s sports campus are available for international football teams to utilise during the tournament. These facilities are being promoted by the Greater Stellenbosch 2010 Project as a base for training for visiting teams. The Greater Stellenbosch 2010 Project is a collaborative effort between the university and local council.

The football training grounds in Stellenbosch offer all the facilities, support and amenities that an international football team requires during this important event.

Why Stellenbosch?
Stellenbosch is situated about 40 minutes’ drive from Cape Town, which is one of the World Cup host cities and home to the impressive Cape Town Stadium. Due to Stellenbosch’s proximity to Cape Town, teams using sports facilities at the university will have easy access to matches in the city. However, they will be based in a location that won’t be swarming with visitors flocking to Cape Town for the event.

Maties’ (the widely-used Stellenbosch University nickname) soccer development has been aided by the existing training facilities in Stellenbosch. The university’s sports campus is well equipped to host international teams, and has been used by many visiting sports teams competing in major tournaments in Cape Town.

The Coetzenberg Sports Campus training facilities
The Coetzenberg Sports Campus is located at the University of Stellenbosch. It offers a first-rate collection of indoor and outdoor soccer training facilities, including a fully-equipped gymnasium, recovery centre and sports-medicine unit, all in one location. These types of facilities are vital for international football teams, as they cater for all sports, physical and medical needs.

Outdoor facilities include the Danie Craven Stadium and the Coetzenberg Athletics and Soccer Stadium, both with floodlights, and with seating capacities of 17,000 and 14,000 respectively. Two artificial turf fields, 21 soccer pitches, outdoor and heated indoor swimming pools, an indoor playing centre and squash courts are also available. Once the tournament has finished, the facilities will be of use to local teams and other visiting sports teams, as before.

First-rate facilities for visiting teams and locals
All amenities are maintained according to international standards, ensuring that Stellenbosch University offers a world-class sports complex. Security services, run by the university and council, ensure players’ safety.

“The Maties’ soccer development facilities provide everything that an international soccer team will need for the World Cup this year. What is also in the town’s favour is the fact that Stellenbosch is quiet, and located outside of Cape Town. Our air is unpolluted and the surroundings are idyllic,” says Alderman Patrick Swartz, Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch.

“We are especially proud of the Sports Performance Institute (SUSPI), and the medical services available, as these are so important in professional sport.”

Stellenbosch is well prepared for 2010. The Maties’ soccer training facilities are a one-stop base for sportspeople, and are ideally equipped to cater to all visiting teams.
