April 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Spring is here, so it’s time to get rid of dreary drapes and lighten up your home with sprigs of color and fun patterns. Start with fresh flowers. They make a great replacement for a winter centerpiece and are an inexpensive way to usher in the colors and scents of the season. Put them in a fancy vase to dress up your dining table. “If you have different crystal pieces, glasses or tea cups, people are putting them all on the table together. Bring them in and we’ll make little arrangements to fit anything,” says Jerome Raska, 52, co-owner of Blumz … by JRDesigns in Ferndale. Make your flowers last by using the nutrient packet that comes with them and cutting the stem on an angle by about a quarter or half-inch before putting them in water, Raska says. Re-cut and replace the water every few days. Here are more tips for lightening up your home décor. Paint. If a room feels drab, start with paint. Go bold with a contrasting wall or pair unexpected colors like soft violet and orange and grass green and petal pink. There’s also the perfect white. Dawn Jacobs, 43, an interior designer and owner of Artichoke Interiors in Clarkston, says cooler hues of lavender and blue are becoming fashionable replacements for reds and golds. Change the curtains. Remove the drapes that hung all winter. Dress windows with simple shades or blinds. Jacobs also recommends sheers or linen panels. Go with fewer knickknacks. “When the weather gets warm there’s so much to see out the window that you don’t need as much inside,” Jacobs says. Change the table setting. Use bright placemats or a runner with matching or complementary chair pads. Make the bedroom a retreat. Put that dark bedspread in a closet. Cover an old quilt with a duvet cover. Change the shower curtain. You can go simple with white cotton or jazz it up with a pattern that sings spring. Search the clearance racks or make your own with a double-sized sheet hemmed to size. Add pillows. Inexpensive pillows on chairs, couches and beds are an easy way to brighten a room. Bring in wicker. It doesn’t have to stay outside. Look for rattan, wicker and cane chairs and tables that scream Palm Beach living and cost much less than traditional furniture.
