By: Eden Reforestation Projects Eden Reforestation Projects is a non-profit, 501.c.3 charitable organization dedicated to poverty reduction through environmental stewardship. ERP recreates healthy forest systems that restore hope, alleviate suffering, empower people and build local economies in impoverished communities and currently has projects running in Ethiopia, Madagascar and is in the beginning stages of a project in Haiti. Environmental destruction, through deforestation, is a major cause of extreme poverty in many underdeveloped nations and ERP is providing a real world solution by planning trees, providing local jobs, and by doing so, saving lives and rebuilding lands. “The 10 million tree mark is the direct result of caring individuals, churches, businesses and communities across the U.S. and world who have remained committed to the reduction of extreme poverty through environmental stewardship,” With the promise that “for every dollar donated, a minimum of 10 seedlings will be planted,” ERP strives to be highly cost-effective and maximizes donations by planting seedlings in well managed nurseries and guarding year-round until they become fully mature trees. The practical approach to hiring nationals in each location has provided over 3,000 jobs, helping stimulate the local economies and provide hope within the communities. Keeping costs and overhead low enables ERP to organize compassion projects that address the local needs in each community and village, including vaccination clinics, clean water supplies and childcare programs. In 2010 ERP plans to expand on the projects in Ethiopia and Madagascar and in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, remains dedicated to the project. Over the next few years, ERP hopes to expand into other underdeveloped countries that have felt the devastating effects of environmental degradation.
