After an especially harsh winter, cities throughout the nation are welcoming the blooming of cherry blossoms and with them, the approach of Spring. Farmer's Markets are reopening and Modernest's new Cherry Blossom bag provides a welcome burst of color and seasonal optimism in an eco-friendly tote bag.
More and more cities are actively discouraging the use of plastic bags. As part of this trend, Americans are becoming increasingly accustomed to reaching for reusable shopping bags, purchasing local and organic produce, and changing their habits in ways that both improve health and help the environment.
Modernest's debut collection comes in five original designs: Argyle, Cherry Blossom, Egg (their signature bag), Modern Love Birds and Typography. Modernest bags are cut and sewn by hand in America. They use unbleached natural cotton that is grown in the U.S. and a factory that is woman-owned and sweatshop free. The Modernest Cherry Blossom tote bag features hand-illustrated artwork and is the first in what will be the company's "Botanical" series.
Designer/owner Joyce de Brevannes says, "Growing up, our Japanese mother taught us that the arrival of the cherry blossom spoke of nature's rebirth and renewal each Spring. I wanted to include this beautiful flower on our modern tote bags. It was a way of honoring nature and my mom, while creating a product that will help our planet with its longevity and reusability."
Ms. de Brevannes launched her company, http://www.modernest.com in response to the mountain of reusable shopping bags in her car. Flimsy and made in China, she searched for a sturdy, American-made tote bag with a modern sensibility. Unable to find exactly what she wanted, she, like many entrepreneurs, decided to create her own product. Enlisting the talents of her graphic designer boyfriend, the two launched their line of canvas tote bags at the beginning of March and the response has been very positive.
