March 2, 2010 - PRLog -- With a lot of support, good information and the right equipment, enjoying time together traveling should be no problem for families with special needs children, believes Linda Walsh, owner of FamilyTravelGear.com. Linda Walsh is the mother of a special needs child along with her two other children.  From day one, her mission in life was to learn to live with disabilities by continuing to enjoy traveling and sharing the world with her family.

“When our daughter Bridgette was born with Down syndrome 5 years ago, we were afraid we would never travel again,” she explained.  “At the time we were uncertain of many things, so we faced our fears, started doing our homework and prepared ourselves for a long road trip,” stated Mrs. Walsh.  Linda and her husband Kevin literally spent weeks planning a 3000 mile round trip drive from their home in Denver to Disneyland.  They learned that being prepared and organized while traveling with their children, including their child with special needs made all the difference in experiencing a successful journey.”

The Walsh's endured many challenges in their research while trying to find tips, information and products for traveling with special needs children.  They had to be certain they were prepared for a medical emergency while on the road, and had to be sure to bring sufficient amounts of their daughters medicines, medical supplies, as well as special foods for her extremely sensitive dietary issues.

The time and effort it took to find good special needs travel information and the right products to make the trip easier for their daughter Bridgette and her siblings was discouraging.  Searching for storage compartments to hold medical supplies, specialized insulated food carriers, and other specialty items caused the Walsh's to spend countless hours online.

When they were finally packed and ready to go, the adventures began.  While on the road, they gained an incredible amount of knowledge regarding traveling with special needs, from locating hospitals near hotels, to cooking specialty meals on the road as well as entertaining the kids during the long haul.  “When we got back, many of our special needs support group friends asked us a lot of questions,” said Linda, “sharing that they were now inspired to take a trip with their families."

The experience convinced Kevin and Linda that there was a need for a special needs blog offering specific advice, travel tips, travel information, on the road recipes and support to assist other families traveling with special needs children.  This March 2010, Linda and Kevin are excited to launch their new Family Travel Gear blog, a place where parents can go to find the information, support, checklists and just about everything they need to help make traveling with special needs children successful and fun.

“It is not reaching the destination that is important, but the joy we experience along the way that really matters.  Life is a journey, we want everyone to be a happy traveler!” replied Linda Walsh.
