Two former high school classmates from Seattle have teamed up, 11 years later, to create PocketPhilanthropist, an iPhone and iPod Touch application designed to raise funds for a different charity each week.

Due to launch in Spring 2010, the free, downloadable “app” will be available via iTunes. With it, iPhone and iPod Touch users will be able to make charitable donations, starting at $1, with the touch of a finger. Each week, PocketPhilanthropist will feature a different charity and distribute the “app” generated donations back to that charity.

“After witnessing the power of mobile donations for the current Haiti crisis, we’ve found that avenues for making donations should become increasingly simple and accessible,” said Nathan Moyer, co-founder of PocketPhilanthropist, Inc. Moyer and his friend, Shaun Hong started the company after learning that three million dollars were raised in one day for the Haiti crisis via mobile text donations, social networking and viral marketing. “Raising funds is a challenge for most charitable organizations, so our vision is to simplify the process, and inspire people to take action today,” said Moyer.

With goals of clearly educating the end-user about each charity, PocketPhilanthropist will take a photo-journalistic approach, traveling across the United States and interviewing different charitable organizations about their challenges and goals. The coverage from this journey will continuously be shared with the end-user as each charity is featured.

Throughout the month of February, PocketPhilanthropist is competing in the Pepsi Refresh competition in hopes of winning funds that will be used to support the non-profit. To vote for PocketPhilanthropist, visit http://www.refresheverything.com/pocketphilanthropist
