SEM Link Inc and SWE host Science Café to Expose K-12 students to engineering

Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc (SEM Link), and Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Partner for Celebration of National Engineers Week on Tuesday, February 16th from 6-7 pm to expose students to engineering.

As a part of its, Math and  Science Career Academy, SEM Link is partnering with the Atlanta Section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) to host a Science Café, “Engineers What They Do and How to Become One” to celebrate National Engineers Week(e-week), February 14-20, 2010.  This is the second year that SEM Link and SWE have partnered to host a Science Café during E- week. Science Cafés are informal and interactive scientific seminars for K-12 students, parents and educators that discuss real-world applications of science, engineering and mathematics. This is Science Café will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 from 6:00-7:00 pm at King Middle School on 545 Hill Street. This event is for Cool Girls program participants, the students at King Middle School, but is also free and open to the public.
 
The café speaker is Ms. Beth White, a graduate of Colorado State University and a SWE member, is a Civil Engineer with Merrick & Company.  Merrick is a full service engineering and architecture firm.  Ms. White will be speaking about how the various disciplines of engineering come together and contribute on completing a project. She also briefly explain what classes (math & sciences) K-12 students needs to start taking at a young age to get an early start on a career in Engineering!  “I am excited that we are able to host this event with the Cool Girls Program at King Middle School” says SEM Link Executive Director and Founder Tokiwa T. Smith. “It gives us an opportunity to go directly to where the K-12 students are and expose them to engineering and engineering professionals.”

SEM Link is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization, founded in 2005 that promotes student achievement and career exploration in math and science for K-12 students by connecting them with individuals with backgrounds in science, engineering and mathematics. SEM Link has a two-core program model, Experimental Design Program and Math and Science Career Academy. These programs provide students with opportunities to develop their math and science skills by enhancing the classroom learning experience and teaching them skills that are transferable to other areas of life. Since its inception, SEM Link has enhanced educational experiences for over 1000 Metro Atlanta youth through hands on math and science activities, career exploration and exposure to real world applications of math and science.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), founded in 1950, is a non-profit, educational and service organization. SWE is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration for women. SWE empowers women to succeed and advance in those aspirations, and to be recognized for their life-changing contributions and achievements as engineers and leaders. The Atlanta Section of SWE holds regularly scheduled meetings, and participates with the local technical community in annual Engineers' Week events, as well as with activities at local schools, Girl Scouts, etc.
