Production Of Molecular Scale Engineered Materials Demonstrated In Montana

Materials engineered on the molecular scale offer exemplary performance attributes and combinations of properties otherwise unavailable.

Feb. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- EIP International, a Montana based technology company, in partnership with Montana State University researchers have recently demonstrated a proprietary deposition technology enabling the engineered production of material systems controlled on the molecular level.  The ability to produce materials with this level of control allows for an engineered approach to material design on the most fundamental level.  This technique is applied on modified chemical vapor deposition equipment commonly used to produce thin films for the semiconductor and electronics industry.  Similar to putting Lego’s  together this technique puts molecules together using advanced understanding of molecular behavior.  This work was supported, in part, by a grant awarded by the Montana Research and Commercialization Technology Board.

Nanodimensional (1 billion nanometers = 1 meter, nanodimensional means on the scale of one billionth of a meter) engineered structures will and in some cases all ready provide novel material systems with vastly increased performance and functionality.  The ability to tailor a system on the molecular level enables the production of systems with far superior and in many cases novel property sets.  Enhanced mechanical, optical and electromagnetic properties are commonly reported in the literature.  These novel multifunctional materials are finding utility across a wide spectrum of advanced technologies (sensors, energy systems, catalysis, computing, medical, defense, communications etc.).  Nanotechnology is projected to impact almost every facet of modern technology and are truly the materials of the future.  The technology being developed produces the basic building blocks for nanotechnological applications.
