Orlando, FL – January 29th, 2010:  Members of the American Widow Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to this generation’s military widows, will gather together on January 29th, 2010 in Orlando, FL. The organization hosts events throughout the country to unite military widows to celebrate their survival, honor their loved ones sacrifice, and provide a healing environment with others who share this journey. The weekend, aimed at creating new bonds in a relaxed atmosphere, will be spent at the Bahama Bay Resort, a Wounded Warrior sponsored condo for families of the fallen and wounded. Activities planned for the weekend include a day of swimming with the dolphins at Discovery Cove, a night at the Makahiki Luau Polynesian Dinner Show at Sea World, and another evening dinner at the Columbia Restaurant, a well known Florida staple. In addition to the named events, the AWP has a few more surprises in store for the military widows attending this special weekend getaway.

The American Widow Project would like to especially thank Frank and Mary Jean Fanni from “A Touch Above”, Kevin Tackett and Brian Loudon of Quiznos Orange Lake, and Gina from Sam’s Club store #4782 in Orlando, FL for their generous donations in supporting this event. Additionally, we would like to thank Kate Laming and Candido Ferreira for coordinating our special night at Columbia Restaurant and Kate McCauley from the Wounded Warrior Family Support group for organizing accommodations.

The American Widow Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to reaching out and helping heal a new generation of widows particularly of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) military personnel, as well as non-combat related. The organization was started in 2007 by Taryn Davis after the loss of her husband, 22 year old CPL Michael Davis who was killed in action in Iraq on May 21, 2007. Finding herself a widow at the age of 22 she discovered that there were few resources to help young widows of the War on Terror. Following her grief and confusion, four months later she began work on what is now a unique nationally based non-profit organization that helps this generation of war widows. Since then, she and a core group of widows have reached out and helped heal those who suddenly find themselves part of a unique sisterhood – those who have lost their spouses as a result of war. The AWP creates a support system for a newer, younger generation of war widows in addition to the landscape of other services needed by the families impacted by the loss of their family member.
