Getting an A&R reps attention at a record label seems like a daunting task. Most, if not all record deals going down now are brought to the record labels' attention from a trusted source. These are managers, attorneys, producers, and talent scouts that the record label has done business with before. And, in order to get the attention from one of these trusted sources, an artist must be willing and able to promote themselves and tour relentlessly to gain a massive fan base. This takes a lot of time, effort, resources, and funds that of which many talented musicians do not have. Just because an artist does not have a large fan base does not mean that they may not have exceptional talent and a 'hit song' that no one has heard.
"I know how frustrating it can be for some of these guys that work so hard at writing and recording a great album just to have it sit on the shelf and go nowhere. Especially with the economy the way it is, the record labels are even more critical of what they get behind to put out on the market," says Zane Tobin Independent A&R founder Zane Tobin.
The tried and true method to get signed to a record label is hard, but there are other avenues out there. If an unsigned artist can find an independent A&R rep or A&R scout who is more 'reachable,' this may be a more realistic option. The whole point is to get someone to listen, regardless of how far up the ladder they may be. If they have some contacts and like the artist's material, it's a starting point and may end up being the single most important thing to their career's future in the music business.
