Wedding and event planning firms, Black Bag Productions and Events of Sophistication collaborated in April 2008 to launch The Magic Wand Project ("TMWP"). Its primary mission and focus is to provide formal attire for young men and women whose families may not be able to afford the costs of formal accessories, gowns and tuxedos. Charitable donations of gently used or new cocktail and evening gowns/dresses, shoes and accessories, such as wraps, purses and jewelry for the young ladies and black tuxedos and suits, along with shoes and accessories such as vests, ties and cufflinks for the young men had been requested since they started and has seen a steady increase in donations. This year's drive will take place on Monday, March 1 from 5:00 to 8:00pm at Morton's The Steakhouse-Arlington, 1631 Crystal Square Arcade, Suite 54, Arlington, VA 22202.
The founders have collaborated once again this year with a cadre of small business owners that include hair stylists, makeup artists, nail salons, photographers, and still need dry cleaner in kind donations as well as an in kind donation for year-round climate controlled storage for donations currently in hand and will receive during this year’s campaign. Sales and Marketing Manager, Kim Christensen contacted us to offer the restaurant as a possible venue for dress collection. Christensen, who previously was the Senior Catering Manager with Washington DC Convention Center Embassy Suites location, had continued to follow the Project and its progress and wanted to lend a hand again at her new place of employment, says Moss, who was thrilled when she and Christensen reconnected this year. Morton's is offering a complimentary Bar Bite to restaurant patrons who donate a gently worn dress or tuxedo, shoes or accessories to TMWP.
Spring 2010 Magic Wand Parties where students will be able to select a gown, tuxedo or accessories and receive special gifts are scheduled to take place sometime in April. For more information on the Magic Wand Project and its events, visit www.themagicwandproject.com
