Dec. 31, 2009 - PRLog -- Talk of the death of newspapers is more than a little premature, even with 2010 looming. People haven’t stopped being curious about what’s happening in the world around them. What has changed are the delivery systems:  we email, tweet, text, check out smartphones and the Internet.

How we access our news (and how our news finds us) is undergoing an exciting revolution and websites for news organisations like the BBC’s or the Guardian are wonderful, content rich and endlessly fascinating. The Guardian — a traditional quality newspaper may be finding sales difficult to come by — but it has one of the neatest iphone apps for news junkies like me making it simple to stay up to date and keep tabs on your favourite columnist’s views in an instant.

Content remains king — always will be. So while newsprint may become a museum piece in our lifetime the lessons of what made great newspapers are as true today for any Tweeter hoping to build up a tribe of followers. Weary content equals no fans, desperate readers and a moribund website, brochure or if you really love paper — newsletter.

Search engines know the golden rule about content too. So if you want a good search engine ranking you have to have the content to go with your pretty design. Then you have to build up a following. Make it simple and easy for people to get to know you’ve got a voice worth listening too.

No-one knows what 2010 will bring. That’s the drama of the news arena. But for your organisation to stand out you need to play your part and contribute to the flow of information — with lively and engaging content.

Have a good New Year.
