The gleaming white towering structure can be seen from several miles away, and while it may never be hung from a tree is clearly the largest Christmas ornament in the world. It is in fact, taller than twenty average sized Christmas trees stacked one on top of the other. The cross also serves a dual purpose as a cell phone tower. It is over 100 feet high, thirty feet across, nine feet around its base, and weighs several dozen tons. Approximately 1500 watts are need to properly light the structure. It was built by T-mobile to provide cellphone coverage. Said Pastor Dr. Douglas E. Fountain, "We're happy now to spread the Good News, as we join with Christians the world over to celebrate Christmas."
T-mobile approached the church in the spring of 2008, proposing to build a tower to supply cell coverage and 911service in a radius around the church. It was suggested the church would benefit from the construction of a cross concealing the telephony equipment. A 1996 federal law says towns must accommodate the placement of enough towers to ensure that 911 callers can be located and that proper coverage is provided. With a tower in the area now, 911 can determine the location of a cell phone user in distress.
