CIG: Atlantis to evaluate options for India’s first ocean energy project.

A feasibility study for India’s 100MW tidal energy project gets underway.

Dec. 3, 2009 - PRLog -- CIG has learnt that following hot on the heels of the recent announcement by London based marine energy specialists Atlantis Resources Corporation that it will be testing the world largest tidal turbine of the coast of the Orkney Islands, the firm has signed a new deal with Narenda Modi, Chief Minister of the Indian state of Gujarat by which it will conduct an in-depth economic and technical feasibility study in the Gulfs of Kutch and Khambhat, both with known strong tidal ranges.

The new deal could see Gujarat propelled to global leader in tidal energy.
In the event that a suitable site emerges, CIG believes that the firm will deploy tidal energy devices capable of generating more than 100MW of energy, enough to power around 40 000 households.

Although the project would require millions of dollars in investment, Atlantis’s CEO believes there is a strong economic and environmental case for the technology to be used, saying, "The Gulfs of Kutch and Khambhat are renowned for their extreme daily tidal exchanges, in harnessing this renewable energy quickly and sustainably, Gujarat can become a world-leader in tidal energy."

CIG believes he went on to say that the scheme would fit the Indian governments view to expand the country’s renewable energy capacity, following on from its recently launched Solar Mission strategy.
