It’s fair to say that most kids don’t like anyone touching their hair. Take a kid with special needs or sensory processing disorder and you’ve got quite a predicament. How can you cut their hair without touching them?
Sherry’s answer is simple: “Play with them.” In fact, a lot of her day is spent playing around the train table. She finds if she can play with kids, they’ll feel comfortable and let her cut their hair.
“You can’t force kids to do anything. But you can play with them. And when you do, you build trust.” Playing is one tactic. Another is to let parents walk away. When Sherry plays one-on-one with a child, kids open up easier.
“I love my job. My kids are my family. I’ve seen them grow up. Take Shephard Arthur, for example. I’ve been cutting his hair since he was very little.”
Shephard Arthur is Hailey Arthur’s son. Hailey is the owner and manager of Blakeney Pigtails & Crewcuts. “Having a child with special needs means you have to accommodate them in different ways. And our salon is set up to make children feel comfortable.”
