FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Nov 04, 2009 – Spokane, Washington  With election returns final, the grassroots group Save Our Spokane has claimed victory over the Envision Spokane Community Bill of Rights.  With over 75% of voters rejecting Proposition 4, Save Our Spokane spokesperson Edie Streicher declared it a mandate from the residents that, “This type of effort, to drastically change city laws, will not be allowed by the citizens of Spokane.”

“ These election results make clear that the people of Spokane don’t want to have a small group of citizens tell them what is best when it comes to the role of government and the way our city should grow,” said Streicher.

The Community Bill of Rights, while only listed as a summary on the ballot, were comprised of 10 changes to the city charter that would have, among other statutes, demanded the city administer health care, allowed 15% of voters in a neighborhood to block any growth or changes, and eliminated the ability of corporations to defend themselves in a court of law.

“Spokane was chosen for this test, and Spokane has earned an 'A' on the test by coming together and saying no to a laundry list of high risk and high cost ideas,” stated Streicher.
Envision Spokane has indicated that attempts may be made to bring this proposal back to the ballot, however Save Our Spokane believes with such a steep cost to taxpayers to place an initiative on the ballot, Envision Spokane should save our city money by listening to the huge outpouring of opposition, which is evident by tonight’s vote count.

“This is it.  People are now more aware of what they are signing to get on the ballot,” said Edie Streicher, “and this election proves the overwhelming majority oppose Envision Spokane – or whatever names or methods that may be used to try and pass such an effort.”
