Heart Internet Report on How Just 1 in 5 People Use their Own Website to Secure Employment

Job hunters are failing to utilise the power of a personal website in order to find work according to research conducted by UK web hosting company Heart Internet

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Oct 23, 2009 – Nottingham, UK,  -- Job hunters are failing to utilise the power of a personal website in order to find work according to research conducted by UK web hosting company Heart Internet. The study* of 1,200 internet users, uncovered that as few as 1 in 5 (22 per cent) of website owners are using that website to promote themselves or their work.

The study also found a clear gender divide with men almost three times more likely to use a personal website to raise awareness of their work. Age also played a factor with the study showing a clear difference in their approach to using a website. 16 to 24 year olds were the most likely to have a personal website (40%) with the prevalence of having a personal website decreasing with age.

Jonathan Brealey, managing director of Heart Internet said, “It is well documented that potential employers are routinely searching for information about their candidates online so it is important the candidates control that information and present themselves in the best possible light.” Jonathan continued, “owning your own name as a domain name and creating a website to showcase your CV ensures they see the information you want them to see, and demonstrates initiative to your new employer.”

The main barrier to creating a personal website was found to be technical with 28 per cent of respondents stating they would like to develop a website to promote themselves but do not feel they have the technical skills to do so. Brealey added, “With web hosting starting from as low as £2.49 per month and free web site building tools coming free with all our hosting, at Heart Internet we are attempting to break down these barriers and help people fulfil their potential.”

As one of the UKs leading web host, Heart Internet provides individuals and businesses with a comprehensive range of hosting solutions including domain names, shared web hosting, dedicated servers and reseller hosting.
