Sept. 28, 2009 - PRLog -- The latest series of America’s Next Top Model, which this time features only models under 5’7”, has received a mixed response from critics.

Some within the industry believe that the series will give false hope to more petite models who have ambitions concerning catwalk modelling, while others are hailing it as a groundbreaking move on host Tyra Banks’ behalf, likely to impact on the industry standard. Whatever you believe, one thing is for sure - the more petite model is about to get some unique hype!

For catwalk the industry standard is around 5’8” minimum, and the runway is notoriously difficult to crack for those under this height. However, it should not be forgotten that Kate Moss, perhaps one of the world’s most famous supermodels, has enjoyed continued success on and off the catwalk for over twenty years, at just 5’6”.

If you have it, you have it!

So is Tyra’s latest move really so significant? Some say it is.
Tyra Banks is a hugely influential figure in the world of fashion modelling. If the model she chooses at the end of the season is successful and proves the existence of many potential Kate Mosses out there, then our society and fashion industry’s perception of what works on the catwalk could change forever, leading to more relaxed height restrictions and, in turn, more work for petite models.

In her intro voiceover to America’s Next Top Model Tyra is heard to say, “I always strive to push the boundaries of what people consider to be beautiful,” and that this season will “change the standards of the modelling industry.”

The standards of the modelling industry are fluid. Many changes in attitude concerning ethnic diversity and size have already been seen recently and look to continue.

Andrew Simmons, speaking on behalf of the leading UK and European Model Agency, Models Direct, has an equally positive message for models who are shorter than the current catwalk industry standard.

“What Tyra Banks is doing in this series of ANTM can only be a positive thing for the more petite model, but there are many reasons to be cheerful for those who do fall into this bracket,” he points out. “There are many types of modelling besides fashion catwalk for more petite girls! If your look fits there are opportunities in catalogue, fashion print, fashion editorial, general interest editorial, product, lifestyle, promotional, character and photographic modelling, not to mention TV advert or extra work. Each individual has their own look and personality to be considered, which is why there will always be models that challenge the conventions of the industry,”
