What Auto Body Shops and Insurance Companies in Fort Worth, TX don’t want you to Know

As a result of insurance companies contracts with auto body shops, the shop is temped to cut corners, use lower quality materials or neglect certain steps in the auto body repair process

Sept. 17, 2009 - PRLog -- Fort Worth, TX – Jack Barker, owner of Collision on Wheels, a mobile auto body repair shop, recently gave a presentation about the working relationship between some auto body repair shops and insurance companies.

“Like HMOs in the medical industry, insurance companies often contract with auto body shops for a pre-negotiated rate on specific repairs,” said Barker.  “Some practices include requiring low hourly labor rates or forcing the body shop to pay for a rental car if they do not complete repairs timely.  As a result, the auto body shop is tempted to cut corners, using lower quality materials or neglecting to complete certain steps required for proper repair.”

Jack spoke about auto body shops that do not complete repairs when promised.  “Auto body shops like to blame this on a delay in parts delivery when the truth is they took on more business than they could handle.  This forces people to spend money on expensive rental cars.  If your insurance company covers the cost of a rental car, your policy might limit you to reimbursement on a small car when you need something larger.”

Safety is very important to drivers.  Jack explained how many insurance companies require auto body shops to use generic or salvage replacement parts to save money.  “This is acceptable for some repairs, but original-equipment manufacturer parts that are designed to match perfectly are safer in some cases.”

Jack also talked about foreign cars requiring special equipment and a high degree of precision to properly perform repairs.  “Insurance companies typically will not refer you to the auto body shops that are certified by the manufacturer to do this special repair work because they usually charge higher rates.”
